Dexter Yan--LNG-powered mega container ships could receive LNG bunkering in Singapore, near the Suez area, and Rotterdam in future if they are deployed in the Asia Pacific-North Europe trade, according to DNV GL.
Purely LNG-powered vessels are able to load LNG fuel that could support approximately half the round trip for the vessels in the trade, Gerd-Michael Wuersig, DNV GL's director for LNG-fuelled ships and senior principal specialist for business development, told IHS Maritime.
In the Asia Pacific-North Europe trade, LNG bunkering will be available in Rotterdam in 2016, with the timetable for the two other possible bunkering sites yet to be announced.
According to DNV GL, a total of 59 LNG-powered vessels are in operation worldwide as of 17 March, with 80 newbuildings confirmed to use LNG as ship fuel. Of the newbuildings, 16 are container ships. There are no LNG-powered container ships in operation as of 17 March.
The LNG-fuelled box ship newbuildings are ordered by Brodosplit, TOTE Shipholdings, GNS Shipping, Universal Marine, GNS Shipping, Crowley Maritime, and Matson Navigation.
