Dynamic Positioning ( DP ) is the ability of a vessel which is provided through the integration of the various individual systems and functions . A computer control system is done automatically to maintain the ship's position by using a propeller and thruster itself . Reference to the position sensors combined with wind sensors , motion sensors and gyro compass , will be able to provide information to a computer on board that deals with the position of the ship , the magnitude and direction of wind strength and sea state which affects the position of the ship . Examples of the type of vessel that utilize DP is not limited to the convention ships but also on the semi - submersible and Mobile Offshore Drilling Units ( MODU )

The computer program contains a mathematical models of ships which includes information related to the wind data and the tensile strength of the wind on the ship and ship propulsion arrangement . Such information is combined with information allowing sensors onboard computer to calculate the required steering angle and thruster output ( driving ) . This allows the operation of a ship at sea where mooring pengggunaan can not be applied because the water in the sea , and other issues on the seabed .

Under the provisions of the IMO ( International Maritime Organization ) publication No. . 645 , BKI will issue a Rule to Ship with Dynamic Position as Class 1 , Class 2 and Class 3 . Equipments Grade 1 : ships with equipment that does not have redundancy ( Loss of position may occur if something goes wrong ) . Equipment Class 2: The ship has a redundancy of equipment so it is possible there are no active faults in the system and that will cause the system to fail ( loss of the ship's position should not occur from a single fault active component or system such as generators , thruster , switchboards , remote controlled valves , etc. but may occur due to the failure of a static component such as cables , pipes , manual valves etc. ) . Equipment Class 2 Class 3 vessels that can prevent fires or the entry of water into the compartment without causing system failure ( loss of the ship's position is not possible from any failures occur , including in the event of a fire or water ingress in watertight compartments ) - Sjaifuddin Tahir - BKI External Affairs
