Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia is to explore the possibility to develop Security Management System (SMP) audit service for maritime support sector. This intention was revealed at the occasion of SMP presentation by the Bimas Director of the Indonesian Police Department Baharkam Birgjen (Pol) Hengky Kaluara to the Directors and BKI’s officials on 13 March 2015 at BKI Head Office, Jakarta.

BKI’s President Director Rudiyanto within that occasion explained that BKI has the opportunity to develop new business as SMP auditor service firm, particularly for maritime support industry. “For all this time there are rules based on international standard applied for ships and port security, and for maritime support service industries—such as container depot, bunkering agent, container transport, and others—the security management system is possible to be developed, and as those related to the maritime sector, BKI is capable of doing that,” said Rudiyanto.

The Polri’s Baharkam Bimas Director Henky Kaluara in his presentation explained that public awareness about the importance of a company or institution to have security management system is now increased. The demand for the assessment to become SMP auditor firm is increased, as well as the demand from companies requesting for their SMP to be reviewed. So the request is now coming from the company itself, asking for the audit,” said Hengky.

“We knew Mr. Rudi for long, since while he was in Sucofindo. Sucofindo is already appointed as SMP auditor firm for companies operating ashore, and now it seems that BKI is interested to handle the maritime related fields,” Hengky added.

As a former Director of Sucofindo, Rudiyanto told that the request for SMP audit to Sucofindo such as from Pertamina is now overcome so that the audit needs to be done in terms. Since maritime support sector is considered as strategic and sensitive areas in terms of security, BKI—which already has a lot of experience relating to the audit and implementation of ISPS Code in ships and port—has a good chance to become an SMP audit firm which will be managed by its marine service strategic business unit. **
