Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) took delivery of a new coal carrier, Noshiro Maru, from its compatriot shipbuilder Oshima Shipbuilding on September 30, 2016.
The delivery and naming ceremony was held at the shipyard in Saikai, Nagasaki, on the same day.
The 90,150 dwt Noshiro Maru features a length of 235 meters and a width of 43 meters.
The new coal carrier is the third ship to take the Noshiro Maru name since the first Noshiro Maru began transporting coal for Japanese electric utility Tohoku Electric Power 23 years ago.
The 51,100 gross ton vessel is named after Noshiro terminal in Akita prefecture, the destination for coal that is transported mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for the Tohoku district of Japan.
Compared to the standard 70,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, the new Noshiro Maru has a wider beam and a shallower draft.
